Dear Taxpayer:

Another year has come and gone and it's tax time again. We would like to update you on the happenings in Lakeville.

Taxes: As you can see by your tax bill, the mil rate has gone up considerably. There are a combination of factors which caused this rise with education and county tax jumping the largest percentages.

Education: The education bill rose from $42,164.91 last year to $61,260.07 this year. There were three new children in the school budget this year. As Lakeville grows and more children come into the school system we have little control over this cost. County Tax: There was also a rise in the county tax from $23,838.75 last year to $28,035.80 this year. Again, we have no control over this figure.

Transfer Station/Town Garage: The Lakeville Transfer Station will be opening on November 17th. We have been awaiting this event for some time and are excited that it's finally here. The Town has approximately $29,000  of Town funds in the project. The transfer station came in at a cost of $29,311.00 and the garage was at a cost of $99,200. The garage is a 40 X 40 steel building which will house the town truck and fire equipment. A block grant was obtained from the Office of Economic Development for $50,000, and USDA's Rural Development awarded the Town grants of approximately $64,000. These grants were able to make this project a reality.

The transfer station hours will be Thursdays 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon, and Sundays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A sticker will be needed on your windshield to gain admittance. These stickers came in your tax bill two years ago but if you need another one it can be obtained at the transfer station, the Town office during open hours, or by writing to: Betty Dysart, Clerk, Town of Lakeville, RR1, Box 786, Springfield, Maine 04487. Send a SAS envelope along with your map & lot #, vehicle description, year, model and plate # including State of origin. The fee is $1.00 per sticker. If you have more than one vehicle, please send info for each vehicle a sticker is requested.

The transfer station will be taking all normal household waste, white goods, brown goods etc. A fee will be charged for refrigerators, air conditioners, batteries and large tires. Cardboard boxes will also need to be broken down. A list of these items will be available at opening day upon request.

Roads: Those of you who have driven in from Rt 6 in Springfield to Bottle Lake will appreciate the new pavement on the Bottle Lake Road in Lakeville. We're sure we don't have to tell you where the new pavement starts.

Hours: The Selectboard is in on Monday evening at 6:00 PM. The Town Clerk, Tax Collector and Treasurer are in on Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. If you have any questions, please feel free to call 207 738-5047.

Have a happy and healthy Holiday season
